WaQSP UTAH LAKE PLANNING ELEMENT
After three years, 125 stakeholder meetings, 200 individual comments, and numerous unofficial discussions, the final Salt Lake Countywide Water Quality Stewardship Plan (WaQSP) was published in August of 2008. The FINAL WaQSP Utah Lake Planning Element now available for public use. Please let us know if there are any comments or suggestions (801.468.2711).
BACKGROUND
Utah Lake is the primary source of water for the Jordan River, therefore, the quality of water in Utah Lake directly affects the quality of water in the Jordan River. During the irrigation season, water from the Jordan River is diverted into several canals on both sides of the river. A portion of the canal water returns to the Jordan River and its tributaries, which can adversely impact receiving water quality. The Utah Lake planning element considers the effect of Utah Lake and canal return flow on the Jordan River and its tributaries.
SCOPE
1. Compare water quality of inflow to and outflow from Utah Lake.
2. Review the flow management of Utah Lake outflow.
3. Characterize diversions for irrigation and potable treatment.
MAJOR RECOMMENDATIONS
Adjudication of irrigation water rights.
Develop a Countywide Water Quality Model.
Restudy Utah Lake Management policies.
Continue to participate in Utah Lake Quality Studies.
Assess Water Right Exchange Impacts.
